Borderscout Anti-Virus and Spam Filtering

Borderscout is a user configurable anti-virus and spam filtering service, which scans incoming and outgoing e-mails before delivering them to your mailbox.

Administratoring your Borderscout account

To administer scanning preferences for Borderscout enabled email accounts, you will need login via the Single User Login. This will require the full email address and password of the account you wish to maintain.

If you login to this area using the administrator account of your domain, you will be able to setup single mail filter rules which will apply for all users on your account. The administrator’s account also has the ability to reset the password for other users who are in the same domain.

If you have purchased an allocation of Borderscout accounts for your domain, you will be required to login to the Multiple User Login area in order to provision and deprovision email addresses from your account.

Filters

The Filters section is where you can specify which email addresses you want to receive emails from, and those you want to be treated as spam. The white list is the list of email addresses which Borderscout will never treat as spam. The blacklist is a list of email addresses Borderscout will always treat as spam.

For instance if you always want to receive emails from a certain domain, like Claranet, you can have @clara.net or *@clara.net and emails originating from us will never be treated as spam.

The Subject patterns filter is where you can add words that could appear in the subject of an email. If these words are detected in the subject of an email then the email will be treated as spam by Borderscout. If you choose to use the subject filter, please note that it is case insensitive, so it does not matter whether you are using upper or lower case. By using the wildcard symbol * you match anything: *make money fast* matches any subject line containing 'make money fast'

Preferences

This is where you can specify your preferences for how you want Borderscout to treat virus emails and spam. You have three options:

Tag - This is where the email will still be delivered to your mailbox but an additional header will be added to it to identify the email to you as spam or a virus email.

Quarantine - This function will quarantine spam emails for 14 days, after which time they will be deleted. You can check these emails yourself during this time, and either release them to your mailbox, or delete them. You will also be informed of what emails have been quarantined here by an e-mail report, which you can choose to receive daily, weekly, monthly or not at all, via the drop down box at the bottom of the Preferences screen. The default for this report is set to daily.

Blackhole - This function will delete spam and virus emails without quarantining them on the Borderscout server. You can also set Borderscout to email you once a virus email is received using a tick box on the Preferences screen.

There is also a slider bar here which you can tell Borderscout how sure it should be before treating an email as spam. This can range from 80% to 100%. The recommended setting is 96%. Please note that setting the bar to 100% will trap less spam, as you are telling Borderscout to only quarantine an e-mail if it is absolutely sure that an e-mail is spam.
