The staff of Claranet, the IT managed services provider, have voted to support ChildLine, the UK’s free 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger, with a calendar of fun fundraising events which aims to raise £50,000 for the charity.
The 2008 fundraising calendar kicked off on February 14th with a day of Valentine themed events and culminates in a Claranet Christmas party in late November. Events will range from the traditional, such as dress down days and quiz evenings, to the more imaginative, like February’s “Boss-in-a-box” where members of the Senior Management Team, including Managing Director Michel Robert, were locked in cardboard boxes phoning their contacts to request a “ransom” donation.

Up to 47 per cent of problems encountered in developing and maintaining enterprise web systems arise from applications, according to new research from Claranet, the Managed Services Provider for business. Applications were by far the greatest single threat to the availability of companies’ business-critical IT networks.
The research also found that enterprise IT managers spend an hour and a half each day maintaining application performance and availability. This means that applications maintenance costs businesses 540 hours a year in staff time alone.

The payment card industry’s attempts to combat Card Not Present (CNP) fraud will not be sufficient – on their own – to stop fraudsters, according to Paul Simms, Director of The 3rd Man, the UK’s leading fraud screening experts.
Speaking at a seminar hosted by Claranet, the managed services provider for business, Mr Simms admitted that the new Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) was an excellent weapon in the fight against online fraud to date, although it was not the solution to card crime. “Perfect solutions to CNP fraud simply do not exist,” he said.
